Council assigns disputed rail-spur easement to B&G Foods to enable private improvements

Council members approved a resolution on June 23 assigning the city’s interests, if any, in a rail-spur easement to B&G Foods so the company can make improvements and assume liability and maintenance.
City staff explained the rail spur’s ownership is murky in public records and that B&G Foods has historically maintained the track. Under the approved assignment, any other entity seeking to use the spur will need to negotiate access with B&G Foods rather than the city.
Alder Butler and staff said the transfer relieves the city of maintenance responsibility for the spur and allows B&G to invest in improvements intended to support its rail operations. The motion passed by voice vote.
