Outgoing superintendent Dr. McCord thanks staff, families and board in farewell remarks

Dr. McCord, who has served the district for nine years, delivered a farewell address to the Gilbert Public Schools Governing Board, thanking students, staff, families and the board for the opportunity to lead the district.

He named members of his cabinet—"Shawn, Missy, Joyce, Jared, Bonnie, Albert, Don, Jason, John, and Marcy"—and said their collective work strengthened the district. He singled out Gabby Wilson, saying she had been his partner for 17 years and calling her "the heart of this district." He added, "The culture of this school district begins with relationships," and said he will remain "one of the fiercest supporters of Gilbert Public Schools."

The address mixed gratitude and personal detail—thanking his wife Kristen and family, recalling classroom visits and celebrations, and urging continued focus on relationships as central to the district's mission. He closed the remarks with a wry aside and the line, "That concludes my report forever," drawing laughter and applause from the board and audience.

Board members responded with brief tributes, crediting Dr. McCord for strengthening safety measures, academic programs and the district's culture. The board invited Dr. Ryan, who was introduced earlier in the meeting, to join the dais as the district transitions leadership.

The board marked the occasion informally with remarks and a small reception immediately following the meeting; no formal action was required. The district will continue with its agenda, including the adoption of the fiscal 2027 budget later in the evening.
