Lake Benton Public School District board approves preliminary budget, staff pay increase and $8,000 in repairs

Chairperson Schwing called the Lake Benton Public School District board to order at 6:04 p.m. on June 18. The board approved a preliminary 2025-26 budget, a modest increase to support-staff pay, a facilities repair contract of about $8,000 and several staffing changes before adjourning at 6:22 p.m.
The board approved a preliminary budget showing overall revenues of $3,238,211 and projected expenditures of $3,637,584, a gap of $399,373. Board member DeVries moved the measure and Board member Osland seconded; the motion passed. School staff member Woelber told the board that next year's budget will allocate the equivalent of two days per month for the superintendent position.
On compensation, the board approved support-staff rates for 2025-26 with an average increase of $0.50 per hour. Board member DeVries moved the change and Osland seconded; Clerk Steven J. Hurd recorded an abstention on the vote.
The board approved a contract with Dakota Seal to crack-fill the parking lot and to crack-fill and sealcoat the playground court at an approximate cost of $8,000. Board member Osland moved the action, Clerk Steven J. Hurd seconded and the motion passed.
The board also approved a staffing adjustment to replace the enrichment position to balance with part-time music, naming Greg Ehrke to take over enrichment duties previously held by Makenna Greenfield. The motion to approve Ehrke was made by Clerk Steven J. Hurd and seconded by Board member DeVries.
In administrative reports, staff member Hansen said cleaning throughout the building continues and that the district is fully staffed for next year. Hansen also noted that Heather Thomas will serve as a long-term substitute for Ms. Pahl and that Annika Martins (Finzen) will fill in for Ms. Hurd in the library. Staff member Woelber reported that a doorway replacement is nearly complete.
There were no visitor comments, no board reports and no donor or volunteer recognitions. The board adjourned at 6:22 p.m.; Clerk Steven J. Hurd recorded the adjournment.
