Lake Benton school board approves calendar change, maintenance work and staffing arrangement; hears administrative updates

The Lake Benton Public School District board met May 21, 2025, and approved a series of routine actions including a calendar revision for snow days, facilities maintenance work and personnel changes. Chairperson Schwing called the meeting to order at 5:03 p.m., and the board adjourned at 5:31 p.m.
The board approved Option A for updating the district calendar to address snow days and to use e-learning days where appropriate; the motion was moved by Board member Hurd and seconded by Board member Suiter and was recorded as passed. The board also approved the monthly financials showing $140,216.66 (motion by Hurd; second by Suiter). Those routine motions were recorded as passing during the meeting.
On facilities, the board authorized crack filling for the parking lot and crack fill and sealcoating of the playground court. That motion, moved by Board member Hurd and seconded by Board member Houselog, passed. Administrators reported additional short-term facility work: Mr. Woelber said a doorway replacement is scheduled for the end of the week and that a loose garage-door bracket will be repaired. He also said next year’s budget will include an allocation equivalent to two superintendent days per month.
On staffing and programming, the board approved continuing the current combined music and enrichment arrangement and authorized hiring a replacement to cover the enrichment portion (motion by Houselog; second by DeVries). The board also accepted the resignation of Megan Stratmoen and expressed thanks for her service (motion by Suiter; second by Houselog). In administrative reports, Mr. Hansen said weather caused cancellation of the planned fishing day, and that kindergarten and first-grade students instead toured an art studio. He reported sixth graders toured Elkton on May 12. He stated kindergarten graduation is scheduled for May 22 at 9:00 a.m. and sixth-grade graduation at 1:00 p.m. Mr. Hansen said MCA testing is complete but results remain embargoed until later this summer and that he expects the district performed well; he noted fall workshop speakers are largely confirmed, that the district is fully staffed for 2025–26 though the substitute pool has shrunk as people took other jobs, and that the district submitted a Lake Benton Area Foundation grant application for playground improvements.
There were no visitor comments. The board offered thanks to community partners, including LBVE for providing concessions for movie day, the Lake Benton Sportsman's Club and volunteers for preparing a fishing-day event for grades 4–6 (the event was canceled because of weather), Elkton for hosting sixth graders, and Brian Jandahl for his support.
The meeting ended with a recorded motion to adjourn at 5:31 p.m. (moved by Suiter; second by Houselog).
