Lake Benton City Council approves minutes, authorizes claims payments and OKs loan subordination

The Lake Benton City Council on Feb. 2, 2026, approved the minutes from its Jan. 20 meeting, authorized payment of city claims and approved a subordination request for homeowners Noe and Shaelean Melchor during a regular session at the Lake Benton Area Community & Event Center.
Trustee Rosie DeZeeuw moved to approve the Jan. 20 minutes; Trustee Scott Christensen seconded and the motion carried. Trustee Karen Lichtsinn moved to approve payment of the claims presented against the city; Trustee Jon Olson seconded and the motion carried. The council authorized City Administrator/Clerk Eileen Christensen to make the payments. The minutes list vendors and amounts, including Ottertail ($2,668.70), Plum Creek Library ($4,985.00) and Kibble Equipment ($1,516.87); the full claims list is in the meeting record. The minutes state only that the motion "carried" and do not provide a roll-call vote tally.
The council approved a subordination request to allow Noe and Shaelean Melchor to refinance the mortgage on 419 South Fremont Street. The Melchors hold a Deferred Loan Repayment Agreement dated March 14, 2022 that will be forgiven after six years; Co-op Credit Union of Montevideo asked to take first-lien position as part of the refinancing. Trustee Scott Christensen moved to approve the subordination; Trustee Rosie DeZeeuw seconded and the motion carried. The minutes note that requests of this type are routine for the SCDP Rehab Program project.
Administrator/Clerk Eileen Christensen announced the 2026 Board of Appeal and Equalization meeting is scheduled for April 14, 2026 at 6:30 p.m., and the City’s annual meeting with the Lake Benton Fire Department and townships will be Feb. 19, 2026 at 7:00 p.m., both at the Lake Benton Area Community & Event Center. Mayor Patrick Haynes gave no report. The council set its next regular meeting for Feb. 17, 2026 at 5:30 p.m.; a motion to adjourn carried and the meeting ended.
