Lafayette — City utilities staff told the Lafayette City Council on Jan. 12 that a reverse-osmosis (RO) treatment system is the preferred method to meet mandated sulfate limits in wastewater under the MPCA permit.
Utility & Maintenance Superintendent Al Fox summarized recent permitting and technical steps: a BABA waiver for the RO project has been approved, MPCA-related sulfate parameters were discussed in the MESERB permit recap, and the STREAMS stakeholder process remains open for one more opportunity to join before new parties would be accepted only as end users. Fox said an engineer will need to sign revisions to the city's Optimization Corrosion Control Treatment Plan (OCCT). He also noted that he and Utilities Assistant Brennan Moldan plan to attend an MDH-led session in New Ulm on Feb. 3, and that all city personnel will attend AWAIR BBP ERTK training on Jan. 27 through the Regional Safety Group.
No formal council action to select a final technology was recorded beyond noting the BABA waiver approval and continued stakeholder outreach; council members heard the report and agreed to continued planning. City staff will pursue required engineering sign-offs and regulatory coordination as the RO project design advances.
