Council approves first reading of ordinance to add angled parking near two churches

The Sioux Center City Council on April 20 approved the first reading of an ordinance to permit angle parking on sections of Third Avenue SE and First Avenue SW to increase parking for Sunday services at two nearby churches.
Building Official Kris Pieper reported requests to add 11 angled street parking spots near Bethel Christian Reformed Church and 46 angled spots near New Life Reformed Church; both were to be marked with no overnight parking. Representatives from Bethel (Bruce Doyema and Kyle Lindberg) and New Life (Doug Cleveringa and Kembe Hulstein) were present to discuss the requests.
Councilmember Mark Hulshof moved and Councilmember Jennifer Vermeer supported approval of the first reading of ORDINANCE SC-O-03-26, "AN ORDINANCE AMENDING THE MUNICIPAL CODE OF SIOUX CENTER, IOWA, BY AMENDING CHAPTER 69 TO PERMIT ANGLE PARKING IN THE ROAD RIGHT-OF-WAY ON THIRD AVENUE SE AND FIRST AVENUE SW." The roll call vote recorded Aye from Hulshof, Moerman and Vermeer, and an Abstain from Councilmember Cory Gotto; the motion carried.
The ordinance is at first reading; further readings or final adoption will follow the city's codified ordinance process.
