Sioux Center council approves Highway 75 property disposal, wastewater engineering contract and sets levy hearing

At its Feb. 12 meeting the Sioux Center City Council approved a resolution to dispose of city land for Highway 75 improvements, authorized engineering services for the East Interceptor wastewater project, and set a March 30 public hearing on the FY2026-27 property tax levy.
The Sioux Center City Council on Feb. 12 approved several actions to advance infrastructure projects and set a budget hearing for spring.
Councilmembers approved RESOLUTION SC-R-04-26 to dispose of an interest in city-owned property along Highway 75 to permit planned highway improvements. The public hearing on the disposal was opened and closed by Mayor Dale Vander Berg with no oral or written public comments; the council approved the resolution on a 4-0 roll call (Councilmembers Cory Gotto, Mark Hulshof, Eric Moerman and Randy Vreugdenhil voting "aye"); one council member was absent. The council also approved a Partial Release of Development Agreement and an Offer to Purchase, and granted a quitclaim easement for the land to be used for highway purposes.
The council authorized a Professional Services Agreement with Bolton & Menk, Inc. for engineering work on the East Interceptor Improvements portion of the overall wastewater project. Utilities Manager Murray Hulstein recommended the contract; Councilmember Mark Hulshof moved approval and Councilmember Cory Gotto seconded. The agreement was approved by voice vote.
Finance Director Darryl Ten Pas presented a preliminary general fund budget for fiscal year 2026-27 that includes a proposed property tax rate of $11.05 per $1,000 of assessed valuation, a 1.76% decrease from the current levy. The council voted to set a public hearing on the FY2026-27 property tax levy for March 30, 2026.
Earlier in the meeting City Manager Scott Wynja reported on a Feb. 11 Highway 75 construction open house. The consent agenda, which included Jan. 21 minutes, bills, finance reports and a liquor license renewal for Nuevo Vallarta Grocery & Jewelry, was approved by voice vote.
The council adjourned at 5:43 p.m. Its next regular meetings are scheduled for March 2 and March 30, with a strategic planning session set for May 5.
