District crisis and safety coordinator Canon Christiansen told the Shakopee School Board on June 22 that the district has expanded its emergency planning tools, including updated gridded school maps that will be linked to camera systems for real‑time incident response and clearer reunification procedures.
"In a crisis situation, we have real time access," Christiansen said, describing how maps will let first responders go to a specific grid location rather than a generic door number. He reviewed quarterly tabletop exercises that simulate incidents from bus crashes to gas smells and said the district now standardizes building safety folders so substitute teachers and staff encounter the same emergency information across all classrooms.
Christiansen and other staff also discussed de‑escalation training run by special support services, expanded staff onboarding for reunification responsibilities and an online family resource from the I Love You Guys Foundation to clarify terminology (secure/hold vs. lockdown) used in school communications. He told the board that Officer Adam West — previously an SRO partner — has been promoted to sergeant and that a replacement is being identified.
Board members asked how the district will reinforce training when staff turnover occurs; Christiansen and assistant administrators said they are embedding safety matrix training into staff onboarding, running periodic walk‑throughs and maintaining direct communications with principals. The presentation emphasized ongoing review: after every incident the district revises plans and conducts follow‑up tabletop practice.
