The Prinsburg City Council on March 4 scheduled a public hearing for a rezoning request and an associated building-permit placement for March 18 at 6:00 p.m. Mayor Mitch Swart asked for the motion after Councilmember Nate Marcus recommended allowing the rezone; Councilmember Greg Bonnema moved to set the hearing and Marcus supported the motion, which passed unanimously.
Councilmember Greg Bonnema said the City Attorney asked that an easement be provided on the south end of the property to accommodate water and sewer, a point the council noted would be part of hearing deliberations. Christopher and Justina Van Dyken presented a building-permit request for placement on their property; the council confirmed the permit will be considered at the March 18 public hearing alongside the rezoning.
The council approved its minutes from the Feb. 11 meeting; Nate Marcus moved to approve and Mayor Mitch Swart supported. The motion carried unanimously.
On other business, the council approved a Tree-n-Turf quote of $3,399.50 for grounds work after a motion from Dan Negen supported by Greg Bonnema. Mayor Swart raised whether the city should begin treating street trees for emerald ash borer (referred to in the meeting as Green Ash Borer); Councilmember Mike Bredeck asked that Perry and Jeremiah Slagter attend the April meeting to discuss treatment options and timing.
Council members also noted that the hockey rink is currently unusable, that Mayor Swart has reached out to a contact at Compassionate Cottages but received no response, and that City Administrator/Clerk Sarah Van Dyken is still obtaining quotes for hail damage repairs. Water operator Nolan Slagter reported he is completing continuing education for water licensing, and he and Greg Bonnema discussed arranging a temporary stand-in for Nolan during time off, with Kim Duininck suggested as an option.
The council adjourned following a motion from Mike Bredeck, supported by Nate Marcus. The next regular meeting is scheduled for April 8, 2025, at 1:00 p.m.
