Representative Novotny delivered a farewell address on the House floor after being recognized by the presiding officer, thanking colleagues, clerk staff and family for their support during his time in office.
Novotny said serving in the chamber "has been an honor, one of the greatest honors of my life," and described the experience as educational. He compared legislating to his previous career, saying, "Legislating is a lot like the 33 years I spent in law enforcement," citing long hours, stressful situations and the frequent second-guessing that comes with public service.
He thanked the chamber staff and clerks by name, singling out Chief Clerk Patrick Murphy and a longtime clerk, Joanne, for handling the logistical work that allows lawmakers to do their jobs. Novotny also recognized the cop caucus and several colleagues for their partnership and mentorship during his tenure.
Novotny praised his legislative staff, including his legislative assistant Mary McNamara, for institutional knowledge and steady support that helped him navigate policy and recall past ideas. He joked about personal quirks and vowed to shed weight after the session, using humor to underscore the personal toll of the job.
Turning to family, Novotny said his oldest daughter, Emily, was his campaign manager and political confidant, and that his younger daughter Shelby had pursued community relations work. He addressed his wife, Nicole, and said he looked forward to retirement and to becoming a grandparent around July 4.
In closing, Novotny said he was proud to have served and expressed confidence that colleagues would carry on work he helped to start. The exchange ended with brief chamber remarks and applause as he concluded his remarks.
