Madelia council approves $166,445.05 in payments, closes campground and OKs park changes

At its July 22 meeting the Madelia City Council approved a consent agenda including a $166,445.05 check register, authorized a road closure for a block party, directed an RFP to demolish the park’s Tan Shelter, closed the campground through 2024 for lift-station repairs, removed volleyball courts damaged by flooding, and set a variance hearing for Aug. 12.
Chair Cody Eager opened the Madelia City Council meeting on July 22, 2024. The council unanimously approved the consent agenda, which included a detailed check register listing payments that totaled $166,445.05.
The consent vote — moved by Councilmember Andy Gappa and seconded by Councilmember Phyllis Schickling — was recorded as unanimous with all five council members voting yes.
The check register presented for approval named multiple vendors and payments, including a $78,161.26 entry for Northland Trust Services, Inc.; two payments to Total Lawn Care & Landscape ($8,705.00 and $12,169.21); and a $856.00 payment to Madelia Sanitation Inc., among other line items. The minutes list the grand total of the presented payments as $166,445.05.
On park and event business, the council approved several routine actions. Councilmember Glen Christensen moved and Councilmember Mark Slater seconded approval of David Streit’s request to close 1st Street Northwest on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2024, from 2 p.m. to midnight for the annual block party; the motion passed unanimously.
The council also authorized advertising a request for proposals to demolish the Tan Shelter in the park. That motion was made by Councilmember Phyllis Schickling and seconded by Councilmember Andy Gappa; it passed on a unanimous vote.
Citing needed repairs, the council approved a motion by Councilmember Mark Slater, seconded by Councilmember Andy Gappa, to close the city campground for the remainder of 2024 because of lift-station repairs. The motion passed unanimously.
Separately, the council approved the removal of volleyball courts in the park after flood damage. The motion to remove the courts was made by Councilmember Phyllis Schickling and seconded by Councilmember Andy Gappa; the motion was approved unanimously.
The council set a public hearing on a variance request from Terry and Lori Karlstad for property at 509 West Main Street. Councilmember Glen Christensen moved and Councilmember Mark Slater seconded the motion to hold the hearing Aug. 12, 2024, at 5:30 p.m. in Council Chambers; the motion passed unanimously.
With no further business, Councilmember Mark Slater moved to adjourn; Councilmember Phyllis Schickling seconded and the meeting adjourned. The minutes were typed July 29, 2024, and bear the name City Administrator Chris Fischer.
