At a June 10 meeting at the Maple Grove Community Center, the Owners Team reviewed progress on schematic design and operational analysis for the city’s planned community center. Adam Barnett of JLG Architects said, “The schematic design phase is currently 50–60% complete,” and that the final schematic package will be submitted to City Council for review at its July 21 meeting.
Parks and Recreation Director Chuck Stifter opened the session by saying the meeting’s purpose was to provide a progress update on schematic design and gather committee input. Architects and consultants outlined next steps for Phase 2 of the project, which the design team is treating as the major renovation phase.
Barnett described specific design tasks under way, including reviewing and assessing existing building systems, developing detailed floor plans, beginning furniture-layout testing and defining room occupancy capacities to inform space functionality. Those refinements are intended to ensure the renovated spaces meet program needs and expected usage.
Michael Jak of JLG said the schematic for Phase 2 “is divided into two key parts, a social/community component and a fitness/activity component,” and that the design provides space for the amenities the team has identified to meet community growth.
Jay Lotthammer of ISG Inc. described the operational-analysis work that will further refine assumptions about how the facility will be used daily and will guide final plans. He said the team’s approach is to align space planning, programming and membership pricing to maximize usability, community value and financial sustainability.
Members of the Owners Team expressed support for the analysis and directed staff and consultants to proceed as planned. No formal motions or votes were recorded at the meeting. The team noted an expected facility opening in 2028 and that the Council review on July 21 is the next procedural milestone. The meeting adjourned at 9:04 a.m.
