Maple Grove board adopts agenda, hears assessor presentation and walk-in appeals; recesses to May 6

The Maple Grove Board of Appeal and Equalization convened on April 22, 2025, adopted the agenda and heard a presentation from Senior Residential Appraiser Randy DeJong explaining how market values and property tax classifications are set and how petitioners may pursue appeals.

DeJong presented a Hennepin County video and outlined market-condition adjustments used for residential and commercial properties in Maple Grove, reviewed assistance programs available to residents, and explained that certified forms for the meeting would be signed at its close. He also noted the Local Board would reconvene May 6, 2025 and that petitioners would be notified by mail of the Board’s decision; dissatisfied petitioners could appeal to the Hennepin County Board of Appeal and Equalization on June 16, 2025.

During the “additional/walk-in appeals” portion of the meeting, Dean Prabaker requested a revaluation after noting his 2024 assessed value was $388,623 and the 2025 value was $431,000, asking the condition of his property be considered. Kelly Berge said she had a November appraisal that came in lower than her assessed value and offered to share that appraisal with staff. Darryl Dehn urged the city to consider where taxes might be cut. Mayor Mark Steffenson encouraged residents to work with city staff for further valuation review.

A procedural motion to recess the Board to Tuesday, May 6, 2025 at 7:00 p.m. was made by Councilmember Kristy Janigo, seconded by Councilmember Mike Ostaffe, and carried on a 5-0 vote (Mayor Mark Steffenson; Councilmembers Rachelle Johnson, Kristy Janigo, Mike Ostaffe, and John McCullough voting aye). The meeting was adjourned at 7:27 p.m.

Next steps: the Local Board will reconvene May 6, 2025 at 7:00 p.m. for continued consideration of the petitions and written recommendations from assessor staff.
