Atchison County commissioners address storm damage to roads, schedule River Road closure and advance routine administrative items

Commissioner John Calhoon said he toured rural areas around Effingham and Nortonville and noted continued road problems; he asked residents to report issues to the Road and Bridge Superintendent so the department can compile a database for possible FEMA grant consideration. Chairwoman Casey Quinn also acknowledged calls about road conditions and said she has inspected problem sites.
Commissioners agreed to a temporary River Road closure: Road and Bridge crews will place barricades on Friday and remove them on Monday, with Road and Bridge staff member Emily Sternsdorff directing placement and coordinating with Doniphan County.
County Counselor David Van Parys reviewed a Memorandum of Understanding for Memorial Hall and stated it is acceptable; the documents will be available for signature next week. A requested purchase order from the Sheriff's Office reserve fund was raised but deferred while commissioners ask follow-up questions of the Sheriff's Office.
Chairwoman Quinn said she will contact Jill Thorne to obtain a cost estimate for a comprehensive countywide tourism economic-impact data package and will report back to the commission. The meeting adjourned into a workshop at 10:00 a.m.
