Atchison County leaders discuss EMS sales-tax question and interagency response to rising EMS calls

Chairwoman Casey Quinn told the Atchison County Commission on June 16 that an EMS sales-tax question will appear on the Aug. 4 ballot and described recent coordination among area health and emergency-services partners to respond to rising EMS needs.
Quinn said representatives from Amberwell, the City of Atchison, area nursing homes, Project Concern, EMS, the County Clerk’s office and the commission met at the Health and Emergency Services Advisory Board to collaborate on solutions. She said the meeting included discussion of increased call volumes and coordination among entities that provide or receive EMS care.
County Counselor David Van Parys reviewed the legal and publication requirements for placing a sales-tax question on the ballot; County Clerk Susan D. Carrigan said the public notice has been sent to the newspaper and will run for three consecutive weeks beginning this week, satisfying the publication requirement described by Van Parys.
No formal vote on the sales-tax question was recorded at the meeting; the commission discussed outreach and procedural steps and will continue administrative preparation ahead of the August ballot.
