Sheriff says owner bars deputies from former school; council and EDA to seek solutions

The county sheriff told the Moose Lake City Council that broken windows and unsecured doors at the former school building have led to repeated unauthorized entries and damage. According to the sheriff, the property owner "made it very abundantly clear that he does not want anyone in that building," and deputies were instructed not to enter unless there is a life-safety emergency.

Council members said they are concerned about the damaged windows and plywood that has been removed, and asked whether the city can compel the owner to secure the property. The sheriff responded that his office has been in consistent contact with the owner and the city administrator and that the owner has been engaged with city staff and the county economic development authority; he said enforcement options are limited unless the city takes different legal steps.

City staff and the sheriff said parties, including the county EDA, are meeting to explore proactive solutions rather than reacting to vandalism and trespass. The sheriff emphasized the safety risk to individuals who enter the building illegally and noted potential liability for the owner if the property remains unsecured. No enforcement action requiring forced entry was ordered by deputies at the meeting; staff said they will continue collaborative discussions and will update council as options are identified.
