Avondale Estates’ Board of Mayor and Commissioners voted to approve an ordinance establishing a non-exclusive franchise agreement with Google Fiber Georgia LLC to install network facilities in the city’s public right-of-way.
The motion to approve was made and seconded during the board’s Feb. 11 regular meeting and carried by voice vote (five in favor). The ordinance authorizes Google Fiber to place network facilities in public rights-of-way under the terms presented at the meeting; the ordinance text and final contract terms will be available in the city’s official records.
Commissioners asked whether the company would place new cable underground or rely on existing poles. According to the city manager, the company’s “intent is to use existing infrastructure and not have [to bury lines]” except where it cannot use existing facilities. The manager added the installation will mostly use telephone poles already in place.
Mayor Jonathan Elmore read the ordinance title into the record before the vote. No public speakers opposed the agreement during the item; no amendments or substitutions were offered on the floor.
Outcome and next steps: staff will complete any ministerial steps to finalize the franchise agreement and file the ordinance per city procedure. Residents seeking the ordinance text or the franchise agreement were directed to the city clerk’s office.
