Chief Jones said consolidation reduces the number of discrete contracts and saves money over time by avoiding overlapping contract terms. He highlighted cloud‑based evidence storage and rapid access for open records and prosecutions, telling council, “it is critical that that is on video in today's world especially,” and noting cloud storage creates a stronger audit trail for discovery requests.
Jones also described operational benefits: Axon’s system can trigger recording across nearby officer cameras during critical incidents and offers short pre‑event buffering for vehicle cameras. Staff asked council to authorize staff to prepare these contract items for formal approval at the next council meeting; the Fleet 3 contract expires July 20, 2024, so timing is important to preserve current pricing.
The council did not vote during the work session; staff will return with finalized contract documents for consideration.
