Lonsdale approves turnout-gear purchase and repair of 2014 fire engine

The City of Lonsdale City Council on Jan. 29 approved two fire-department expenditures intended to maintain response capacity.
Fire Chief Joe Pumper told the council the department needs to purchase turnout gear for four new firefighters and noted that OSHA requires structural firefighting personal protective equipment be removed from service after 10 years; staff also cited an impending vendor price increase as an urgency factor. The council approved a MES quote for $12,416 plus freight to buy the gear; the purchase will be funded from the Fire Department Capital Outlay Budget.
Pumper also reported that pump testing of Engine 4120 (a 2014 model) revealed leakage at the pump seals. The engine passed an operational pressure test but failed a vacuum test. Council approved a McQueen quote for $13,737.94 to repair the pump seals. Pumper said the engine responded to more than 70 calls in 2025 and that the repair would take approximately two weeks, during which time the department will operate a backup engine.
Both purchases were approved unanimously (5-0). The council recorded that the pump-seal repair will remove the apparatus from service for the estimated repair window but that continuity of service will be preserved using alternates in the fleet. No additional funding sources or contract details were specified in the meeting minutes.
