Parks commissioner outlines temporary 9/11 memorial installation near Gerard Byrne Center

Joe Lucasse, the town's Commissioner of Parks and Recreation, told the board the memorial wall that once stood in town was removed but the town retains a metal artifact from Sept. 11. For this September the department plans a temporary display: two 10-by-10 stained wood posts will be installed adjacent to the Gerard Byrne Center garden with the artifact mounted between them and a pentagon-shaped border around the display.
Lucasse said the artifact will be attached using bolts that will be re-welded and run through the timber so the piece will be secured comparably to its former mounting on the wall. He also said the site will be monitored by an existing camera and that the temporary structure can later be moved to town hall or upgraded if the board wants a permanent memorial.
Board members asked about timing and when they could inspect the finished installation; Lucasse said staff completed related grounds work recently and that the department would present the finished piece for the board's review before any permanent decision.
