Prinsburg council approves Xcel Energy ordinance renewal, series of appointments and routine business

At its Jan. 6 meeting the Prinsburg City Council approved a 20-year renewal of an Xcel Energy ordinance, confirmed several committee and emergency-management appointments, named Sarah Van Dyken city administrator/clerk and approved claims totaling $15,725.09.
The Prinsburg City Council on Jan. 6 approved a package of routine administrative items, including renewal of an ordinance with Xcel Energy, multiple personnel appointments and the designation of the city’s official newspaper.
Mayor Mitch Swart presided as Councilmember Mike Bredeck moved to renew the Xcel Energy ordinance first dated in January 2006; the motion was supported by Councilmember Nate Marcus and passed. The council record notes the ordinance is renewed every 20 years and that the City Attorney reviewed the document and raised no objections.
The council approved minutes from Dec. 9, 2025 (public hearing and regular meeting) on motions by Councilmember Nate Marcus. The council also approved claims presented totaling $15,725.09 on a motion by Mike Bredeck, supported by Dan Negen.
On personnel matters, the council appointed Kyle Sportel as Chief for a three-year term after a motion by Mayor Swart supported by Bredeck. The council also approved naming Sarah Van Dyken as City Administrator/Clerk on a motion by Bredeck supported by Negen. The council approved Warren Damhof, Kyle Sportel and Roy Duininck as Emergency Management members.
Committee assignments for the year were confirmed: finance (Clerk, Greg Bonnema, Mayor Mitch Swart and Nate Marcus); Emergency Management Board (Dan Negen and Mitch Swart); Economic Development (Mike Bredeck and Mitch Swart); Joint Powers (Mitch Swart and Dan Negen); and Zoning (Dan Negen and Nate Marcus). The council also approved Mitch Swart as Acting Mayor (to serve when the mayor is unavailable). Each assignment was moved, seconded and passed (MSP) as recorded in the minutes.
The council designated The Clara City Herald as the official newspaper and approved United Bankers as the city bank and collateral holder. Councilmembers also agreed to set up workshops during the year to revise and update city ordinances and to work on the Public Works job description. Nate Marcus and Greg Bonnema will schedule annual employee reviews with staff.
The meeting ended after Mayor Swart moved to adjourn, with Councilmember Nate Marcus supporting. The council’s minutes indicate the joint powers meeting minutes will be posted to the city website when available.
