Representatives from the Northfield Convention & Visitors Bureau presented their FY priorities and marketing work during the June 16 City Council meeting, describing budget balances, recent grant awards, and evolving digital strategies that increasingly account for search tools and AI.
CVB presenters (including Jane) said the bureau holds about $50,000 in checking, $45,000 in savings and $11,000 in a CD; they reported a $4,000 Explore Minnesota grant and a $12,000 match tied to a governor’s pheasant hunt opener. The CVB said it will add short‑term rentals to lodging tax tracking beginning Oct. 1 and will list those properties on its marketing channels.
Presenters described a mixed print/digital strategy: print ads continue to be used for reach and provide marketing dashboards, while digital campaigns (Google, Facebook/Meta, Instagram and YouTube) drive visitors to the Visit Northfield website. The CVB uses QR codes in print to measure conversions and reported roughly 2,000,000 impressions last year on campaigns; the Star Tribune dashboard tracked 853 ad referrals with 73 lodging conversions and 780 visits to shops and restaurants.
The CVB also discussed adapting website content for emerging AI‑driven discovery rather than relying solely on social media signals. Councilor Peterson White urged caution about using AI to generate creative materials, especially when the community has many local artists and designers. "I think people really can, like, smell it a mile away… authenticity is really at the top of the list," she said, asking the CVB to involve local creatives when finalizing branding.
The CVB highlighted upcoming events—the Vintage Band Festival, historical anniversaries and the pheasant opener—and requested community help with spokespeople and sponsorships for larger media exposure. Councilors asked for more detail on the analytic sources behind visitor and workforce estimates; presenters acknowledged using AI to generate initial workforce estimates and committed to sharing the source data and consultant calculations.
Implementation: CVB will continue the local outreach, refine branding with a local designer, and provide supporting materials requested by councilors.
