Jackson County sheriff candidate Mike DeJong announces campaign at Lakefield council meeting

Mike DeJong used the Lakefield City Council meeting on May 4 to formally announce his candidacy for Jackson County Sheriff following Sheriff Haken’s decision to retire at year-end. DeJong described a career in corrections and county law enforcement dating to 2004 and said he currently serves as a Jackson County deputy and a member of the Jackson Fire Department.
DeJong told the council and attendees that service, trust and stewardship guided his decision to run. "I believe the Sheriff's Office should be grounded in community, service, and trust," he said, and said he would prioritize presence in schools, stronger local partnerships and prudent use of taxpayer dollars.
The council thanked DeJong and wished him luck in his campaign; no formal action was required.
