Lakefield council approves police policy updates, authorizes officer posting and upgrades part-time officer pay

The Lakefield City Council on May 4 approved five updates to Lakefield Police Department policies and took two personnel actions: it authorized posting for the open full-time police officer position and approved a pay-grade increase for a part-time officer.
Chief of Police Roger Pohlman presented five policies for council approval: Policy Nos. 320 (professional conduct), 604 (eyewitness identification), and 1010 (allegations of misconduct/personnel complaints), which the council noted are POST-mandated; and Nos. 308 (responses to calls) and 1000 (recruitment and selection) drawn from the department’s prior Lexipol manual. The council approved all five policies as presented.
Pohlman also requested approval to advertise the open full-time officer position with a Grade 9 pay range ($29.34–$37.36). The council approved posting on Indeed, the Minnesota POST Board and the Lakefield Police Department Facebook page; the mayor suggested adding the Lakefield Standard and the city website to the outreach list.
Separately, the council approved moving Part-Time Officer Trevor McMartin from Grade 7 to Grade 9 (Step 1), raising his hourly rate to $29.34 effective the next pay period (May 2–15, 2026). Council members discussed training and hours: Rademacher reported McMartin has worked 1,275 hours since 2023 (about eight hours per week on average); the Police Advisory Meeting recommended the grade change. Mayor Condon asked that the change be considered in the 2027 budget process, but the motion to approve the pay adjustment passed by council vote.
The chief also reported a community helmet incentive program — officers give a small coupon when they see a child wearing a helmet — as part of department outreach.
