Mesabi East board approves children’s mental health services agreement, accepts $20,000 donation

The Independent School District No. 2711 (Mesabi East Schools) Board voted May 5 to approve a one-year agreement with Range Mental Health Center to provide children’s mental health services and accepted a $20,000 donation earmarked for a swim scoreboard.
Board Chair Walt Hautala called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m. and the board approved the agenda. During district patron comments, Paul Peltier, a district patron representing RAMS, addressed the board about RAMS activities.
On a motion by Director Kathy Undeland, seconded by Director Amanda Gross, the board approved the Range Mental Health Center Agreement effective July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026, to provide children’s mental health services. The board also approved the consent agenda, which included payrolls and bills totaling $1,247,851.78, minutes from April meetings, and a tuition agreement with Falcon View Online School for one student with a reported start date of Aug. 21, 2024.
Directors took several personnel and program actions. The board accepted Connor Matschiner’s resignation as assistant cross country coach (effective the 2025 fall season) and accepted the resignation of Samantha Warren, effective May 29, 2025. It approved spring coaching recommendations — naming Pat McBride as junior high golf coach and Jed Olmstead as a volunteer softball coach — and approved the PSEO contract with Lake Superior College for the 2025–2026 school year.
The board moved to table consideration of the High School Handbook until the next meeting and approved the Elementary School Handbook for 2025–2026. Chair Walt Hautala moved and Director Chris Baudhuin seconded acceptance of Policy 507.5 (School Resource Officers) for a first reading.
The board accepted two monetary donations: $300 earmarked for ME3C and $20,000 earmarked for a swim scoreboard. Reports were provided under separate cover. The board set its next regular meeting for June 2, 2025, at 5:30 p.m. in Board Room 204 and adjourned at 6:22 p.m.
Actions taken at the meeting were recorded by motion and vote; the minutes note motions, seconders and that motions passed by the members present.
