The Unified Government of Cusseta–Chattahoochee County voted Sept. 3 to adopt its 2024 tax levy, setting the actual county millage rate at 8.512 mills after local rollbacks. The commission recorded a total ad valorem tax levy of 25.50 mills, which includes a school maintenance and operation rate of 16.99 mills.
The motion to adopt the millage and certify the accompanying resolution was moved and seconded during the regular meeting and carried unanimously (4 yes, 0 no; Commissioner Damon Hoyte was absent). The resolution directs the clerk to transmit a certified copy to the Tax Commissioner and to publish the levy as required by state law.
The resolution text included the levy components and rollback calculations: Maintenance and Operation of the Unified Government (23.57 mills), local option sales tax rollback (15.06 mills), yielding the 8.512 mills county rate; school maintenance and operation was listed as 16.99 mills. The resolution also states usual statutory exemptions for homestead and personal property apply.
County Manager Thomas Weaver and Clerk Lisa Bickel were listed in the minutes as handling the administrative steps required after adoption. The clerk will transmit the certified resolution to the tax official as directed in the adopted text. No public comment specific to the millage was recorded during the portion of the meeting in which the vote occurred.
The commission’s formal adoption completes the local step required before the tax digest is certified and property tax bills are issued. The clerk’s published resolution and certification to the Tax Commissioner are the next administrative actions noted in the minutes.
