The Mesabi East School Board (Independent School District No. 2711) met Jan. 6, 2025 in Aurora and approved a package of routine and financial measures, including a revised 2024–25 budget, a resolution authorizing a line of credit and a resolution supporting the City of Aurora’s Safe Routes to School Infrastructure Program grant application. Chair Walt Hautala called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m., and the board adjourned at 6:13 p.m.
The board approved the revised 2024–25 budget as presented. Director Amanda Gross moved the budget approval and Director Pamela LaFrenier seconded; the motion passed with "all in favor" recorded in the minutes. The board also approved a resolution authorizing the district to enter into a line of credit agreement; the minutes record a roll-call vote listing Ayes: Directors Amanda Gross, Chris Baudhuin, Walt Hautala, Pamela LaFrenier, Kathy Undeland and Justin Adams, and Nays: none. The board likewise approved a resolution of support for the City of Aurora’s Safe Routes to School grant application by roll-call vote; the minutes list the same six directors as voting Aye on that resolution.
On personnel, the board accepted the resignation of Chad Sahr as head baseball coach for the 2024–25 season and approved hiring Selina Layman as a .20 FTE licensed school nurse (BA, Step 2), effective Jan. 27, 2025, with wages and benefits pursuant to the Master Agreement with Ed Mn Local #1255. Director Amanda Gross moved and Director Justin Adams seconded the consent-agenda motion that included payrolls and bills totaling $1,447,301.30, the Dec. 2, 2024 minutes, and a tuition agreement with MN Connections Academy for one student (start date Sept. 3, 2024); that motion passed.
The board approved a reduction in FTE for Shelly Whiting from .60 to .20 FTE effective Feb. 1, 2025. The READ Act Memorandum of Understanding between ISD 2711 and ED MN Local 1255 was approved, and the board accepted monetary donations of $1,000 for the YIA Student Club Pantry and $3,800 in 2024 donations from local businesses earmarked for Mesabi East Rec. The School Resource Officer Agreement for 2025–2027 was approved as presented.
The minutes note that reports were provided under separate cover and list the next regular meeting as Feb. 3, 2024; given the Jan. 6, 2025 meeting date, that entry appears to be a typographical error in the minutes. The meeting adjourned at 6:13 p.m.
Votes at a glance: line-of-credit resolution — approved (roll-call Ayes listed in minutes: Gross, Baudhuin, Hautala, LaFrenier, Undeland, Adams); Safe Routes support resolution — approved (same roll-call Ayes listed); revised 2024–25 budget — approved (minutes record "all in favor"); licensed school nurse hire — approved (motion passed); FTE reduction for Shelly Whiting — approved (motion passed).
