Rock Creek Planning Commission members agreed July 15 to schedule a public hearing in September to consider lowering the minimum square footage required for accessory (in‑law) apartments from 500 square feet to 200. Chair Curt Kubesh noted the current ordinance sets the minimum at 500 sq ft and that accessory apartments are permitted in R‑1 and R‑2 zones, where typical lot sizes (about 2.5 acres in some cases) limit placement options.
Commission member Oliver Rauschnot said a 25‑foot Park Model — roughly 200 square feet — would be an attractive and compact option, though Park Models are generally intended as temporary housing. Members agreed that a public hearing should be scheduled so the ordinance change can be considered and feedback collected from the public and the City Council. Dan Saumer said he would present the idea to the City Council before the public hearing.
Next steps: staff will place the proposed amendment on the September public hearing agenda for the Planning Commission and continue coordination with the City Council. No final ordinance change was adopted at the July 15 meeting.
