The Newport City Council on Feb. 19 adopted a resolution honoring Gordon “Gordy” Bailey Jr., recognizing the Bailey family’s multi‑generation ties to Newport and Bailey’s leadership of Bailey Nurseries, Inc.
Mayor Elliot read Resolution 2016-14, which describes Bailey as a longtime resident whose family has contributed to Newport’s economic and civic life since 1849. The mayor moved to adopt the resolution and Council Member Ingamman seconded; the council approved the measure by voice vote.
The resolution cites Bailey’s leadership of Bailey Nurseries, Inc., and his decades of community service, saying those contributions “exemplified civic responsibility, community stewardship, and respect for Newport’s institutions and people.” The council extended its “sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.”
After the vote, a member of the Bailey family thanked the council on behalf of the family and said the honor was appreciated. Council members and family members took photographs at the front of the chamber following the meeting.
The council moved on to routine business after the ceremonial resolution; no formal policy actions were tied to the measure.
