Board OKs lane-marking changes, stop sign, mosquito spraying and park bench purchases; signage meeting set for May 6

Engineering guidance reviewed by staff concluded Maple Street’s intersection area is wide enough to accommodate two 9-foot lanes but recommended either installing a 4-inch white dividing stripe between lanes or removing the pavement arrows if the town intends to treat it as one wide lane. The board voted to retain the two-lane pavement markings and to add the recommended 4-inch white stripe up to the brick transition. The board also approved placing an additional stop sign on the left-hand side of the street to improve sightlines; the motion to add a stop sign was seconded and approved by voice vote.
On mosquito control, the street department presented a quote with no price increase from the prior year. After discussion about alternatives and costs, the board voted to continue the existing mosquito-spraying program; one member registered a dissent.
The board reviewed park-furnishings quotes and asked staff to proceed with ordering three 8-foot arch-back benches (vendor quoted about $1,350 each) plus player benches and planters; staff will finalize color and mounting options and return with an order count.
For the town’s 250th/4th of July planning, Legion representatives and festival organizers will meet and return with a specific funding request; the board asked organizers to provide a formal proposal rather than approving seed funding immediately. Staff also scheduled a May 6, 10:00 a.m. site meeting with a signage grant representative to review rules requiring rehabilitation of existing signs before new signs can be funded.
Other items included a report that the airport rotating beacon cannot be shielded due to FAA rules and that staff will pursue warranty remedies for failing park plantings.
Next steps: staff to order approved benches and planters, implement the Maple/Brick Street pavement markings and stop sign, and follow up on the May 6 signage meeting with grant representatives.
