The mayor of Newport City opened a new public dog park at a ceremony that thanked Marathon St. Paul Park refinery for providing land, volunteer labor and giveaways.
The mayor said the park responds to community demand and cited a 2021 survey, saying, "we did a survey in 2021 and over 70% of our residents that were surveyed wanted us to add a dog park into our community for our residents." The speaker also credited refinery volunteers and Newport public works for preparing the site: "We wouldn't have this dog park today without their assistance. We're actually standing on their property."
The ceremony included acknowledgments of partners and onsite amenities. Organizers noted a wood-chip trail installed with help from refinery volunteers and in-kind labor from the city's public works department to clear land and remove stumps and branches. Attendees were invited to visit two booths on site, one from local vendor Fuzzbuck Boutique and another from Marathon, which offered free travel dog bowls; free ice cream treats for dogs were also provided.
Erin Christie, introduced at the event as representing Marathon St. Paul Park refinery, told attendees, "It's awesome to see the dogs out there and uh Newport enjoy the dog park," and thanked city officials for the chance to collaborate. The ceremony ended with a group photo.
No formal council action or vote was recorded during the event; it was presented as a community opening and celebration with public–private cooperation.
