Harmony EDA recommends $40,000 Downtown Revitalization grant for Bishop building

The Harmony Economic Development Authority on Dec. 1 recommended that the city council approve a $40,000 grant to Aaron and Amy Bishop under the Downtown Revitalization Program.
Chris Giesen, who presented the three eligible applications to the board, said the proposals from the Jem Theater, the Bishops and Becky Meyers all met the program’s intent but that selecting one would be difficult. The board concluded the Bishop project — proposing tuckpointing of the entire building plus work that would allow interior completion — would have the greatest immediate impact.
The Bishop proposal includes the full $40,000 grant request and a $16,120 personal match, the minutes show. The board moved to recommend council approval by a motion from Steve Sagen and a second from Steve Donney; the motion carried unanimously.
Board members encouraged the other applicants to reapply in future rounds, noting the program’s goal of making a significant improvement to one building each year and eventually addressing all downtown buildings with need. Giesen said any awards under the program would carry requirements similar to prior years regarding use of funds.
The board’s recommendation will be forwarded to city council for final action.
