Tabith Nelson spoke during public comment that she is on a fixed income, has been placed on a waiting list for Community Action assistance, and feared her water would be shut off because of a past-due balance. She said she expected pay on the second of the month and asked for an extension so she could avoid disconnection and collections.
Nelson said she was willing to work out a payment arrangement; she told the council she expects to be able to pay roughly $300 by the second of the month but remains unsure about the remainder while she waits for Community Action to contact her.
City staff reviewed the account in the meeting and proposed extending the shutoff date to the sixth of the month to allow time for Nelson to pay and for Community Action to respond. "We can extend it out till the sixth and it won't be shut off," a staff member said.
The council did not adopt a formal policy change; staff provided a one-time operational extension and said they would coordinate with Community Action to determine any additional assistance. Nelson thanked staff and left contact information so they could follow up.
Next step: staff will hold disconnection until the sixth and attempt to coordinate with Community Action; no payment plan beyond the temporary extension was adopted at the meeting.
