Cushing selectmen approve warrants, skip May 26 meeting; wood-furnace complaints lack immediate code remedy

Chair Alton Grover called the meeting to order at 6:00 P.M.; the Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Selectman Daniel Staples moved to approve Warrants 21 and 22; Selectman Laurie Haynes seconded and the motion carried 4-0-0 (Selectman Martha Marchut had not yet arrived). Later in the meeting Selectman Laurie Haynes moved to approve the minutes of April 28, 2014; Selectman Daniel Staples seconded and that motion carried 5-0-0.
On a procedural motion about scheduling, Selectman Daniel Staples moved — and Selectman Laurie Haynes seconded — that the board not meet on May 26 and reconvene at the first meeting in June; the motion carried 5-0-0. Staples had noted that the minutes previously approved mentioned discussion of possibly not meeting on Memorial Day and Haynes said it should be skipped if there was nothing pressing.
Under unfinished business, Selectman Daniel Staples reported that the Harbor Committee is looking into a possible public water-access location on Maple Juice Cove; he said there were no new updates. On a separate matter, Chair Alton Grover said he asked CEO Bickford to inspect a wood furnace at Spear Mill after neighbors complained. CEO Bickford reported the unit is used to heat the home and water and that there are no existing laws covering the situation, so staff found no basis for enforcement; an ordinance would be the only municipal remedy mentioned, and the selectmen discussed who would enforce such an ordinance. Selectman Laurie Haynes said she would not favor adopting an ordinance unless residents initiated a petition.
Selectman Robert Worthing moved to adjourn at 6:10 P.M.; Selectman Daniel Staples seconded and the motion carried 5-0-0. Acting recording secretary Deborah E. Sealey signed the minutes.
