Mayor Johnson announces he will not seek re-election

Mayor Johnson announced at the July 16 Independence City Council meeting that he will not file to run for another term as mayor, saying he is "getting to be an old man" and that he can no longer move around as he used to. He said he is "fortunate for good health" but would not seek re-election and added that "Brad is willing to file for mayor and I will support him if he does that." Mayor Johnson made the announcement during the Open/Misc portion of the meeting.
The announcement opens the race for mayor ahead of upcoming elections, which the council noted are approaching. Councilors did not discuss a formal replacement process at the meeting; Mayor Johnson framed his decision as personal and voluntary.
While on Open/Misc, councilors also agreed to move the council's August meeting from Aug. 6 to July 30 at 6:30 p.m. to accommodate a heavier August agenda. The council approved the schedule change by unanimous vote.
The meeting adjourned at 7:16 p.m.
