Milroy council approves $7,000 parcel offer, sweeper repairs and temporary liquor and gambling permits

Milroy — The Milroy City Council met April 27 and approved a series of operational and administrative measures, including a $7,000 offer for Parcel #85-200-1580, authorization to repair a street sweeper with an added $6,300 cost, and temporary event permits for the Milroy Relief Association.
Mayor Margaret Sik called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. and the council unanimously approved the agenda with several additions, including a 1–4-day temporary liquor license and a gambling permit for the Milroy Relief Association. Guest Joe Plaetz of Granite Rock Insurance reviewed the city’s upcoming policy renewal; the council voted unanimously not to waive state tort liability limits.
The council approved its consent agenda unanimously, which included minutes, financial items, three land-use permits and Resolution #6.2026 (Surplus Property). In unfinished business the council voted 4–1 (Mary Dahmes opposed) to make an offer of $7,000 to the elevator for Parcel #85-200-1580.
Public Works Director Sando reported routine maintenance: power-washing city buildings and sidewalks, arrival of a John Deere tractor, and that the park men’s restroom is open while some items in the women’s restroom still need repair. He said several street signs and poles are faded or damaged and will need replacement; Sando told the council the grader cutting edge requires replacement after a resident raised concerns about lawn and curb gouging.
Councilors authorized MacQueen to repair the street sweeper drive motor despite an increased cost: an additional $6,300 on top of a previously quoted $10,200. The motion (Lanny Sik/Renee Zwach) passed 3–2, with L. Sik, Zwach and Mayor Sik voting yes and Dahmes and Schmitt voting no. The council tabled water and sewer rate discussions until the May meeting.
The council approved several smaller public-works contracts: Meadowlands will move an LP tank at the shop for $150, and the city accepted a $1,870 quote from Quality Flow for a vented sewer skirt. Council approved a $500 quote for Dusty Stolp to remove large concrete chunks behind the city shop and near the lift station. Mayor Sik’s April 23 attendance at a financing workshop in Nisswa was approved and her expenses will be reimbursed.
During open forum residents discussed ways to spruce up Milroy ahead of the city’s 2027 Quasquicentennial. Council set meeting and event dates, then adjourned at 8:25 p.m. The council is scheduled to meet next on May 26, 2026.
