Council hears fire and public works updates; approves follow-ups on repairs and training

Milroy — At its March 23 meeting the Milroy City Council received operational updates from the fire department and public works and approved several follow-up steps, including equipment inspections, training attendance and apprenticeship enrollment.
Fire Chief Krueger briefed the council on progress toward a FEMA grant and upcoming house burn training; the relief association committed funds to purchase two sets of turnout gear. Councilmembers discussed having the Public Works Director check water-tower levels during structure fires and directed staff to ask Shane Daniels about appropriate level targets; the council also discussed training firefighters to monitor levels on calls.
Public Works Director Sando reported that the sanitary survey included in the packet requires no immediate action but noted the city’s street sweeper is at McQueen’s for repairs. Council reviewed gearbox replacement options for city equipment and approved moving forward with the new gearbox purchase or acquiring a used unit depending on Director Tom’s findings; quoted prices in the record were $14,973.29 for a new gearbox and $9,993.68 for a used unit. The council directed the Public Works Director to work with JD Plumbing to clean out and inspect the sand trap north of town by the Christensen property and to proceed with previously approved alley granite fines.
The council also agreed to let the Public Works Director join the MRWA apprentice program and authorized the director to attend the MPCA Stabilization Pond Seminar. Quotes for testing meters were tabled pending additional information; Meadowland will be contacted for a quote to move the LP tank. The council decided not to provide a donation to the Redwood County Fair.
