The Lake of the Woods School Board voted June 24 to approve a revised 2023-24 budget and to adopt the 2024-25 school year budget after reviewing year-end postings and revised projections.
Sheena, who presented the financial update, said recent state and county payments improved the district's cash position; after June postings the district showed a $693,000 deficit figure that represented an improvement from earlier months and the board reported receiving over $1 million in deposits in June. The business manager noted that teacher summer payoffs and other year-end transactions would be posted soon.
On motions from the consent agenda, the board approved personnel actions including the resignation of DD Stenberg (social worker) and the hiring of JD Messenbrink for a summer custodial/maintenance role. The board also moved and carried approval of daycare lease agreements with multiple local providers and accepted several donation resolutions supporting programs such as the backpack program and the community 'coming corners' initiative. The board approved the insurance and risk management proposal effective July 1.
The meeting record shows motions were made and carried by voice vote; no roll-call tallies were recorded in the transcript. Board members also discussed opening a hiring search for a full-time business manager and the option to continue contracted services until October if needed.
Next steps: the district will post finalized budget documents and proceed with hiring steps for approved personnel; the board scheduled a special meeting for July 15 and will continue budget oversight in upcoming finance committee meetings.
