Historic District Commission unanimously approves period-style exterior lighting for COA 610

The Historic District Commission voted unanimously on June 17, 2026, to approve Certificate of Appropriateness (COA) 610, allowing the applicant to replace several exterior light fixtures with colonial-period-appropriate models and to move one driveway post lamp nearer the driveway end to ease vehicular access.
Vice Chair Greg Johnson opened the public hearing and invited the applicants to present. Applicant Bethany said the existing front-of-house lighting included fixtures from a 1960s restoration and others installed about 12 years ago that she described as "standard Home Depot style" fixtures. "We would just like to reconfigure a few things, replace the lights with sort of more colonial period-appropriate fixtures, and get rid of one post lamp, and move another post lamp closer to the end of our driveway," Bethany said, noting that larger vehicles have had difficulty accessing the property for work such as tree removal.
The applicants said the new fixtures are black brass—less expensive than copper—and that the finish will weather to a verdigris patina similar to copper. Bethany also told commissioners she had uploaded images and supplier information for the fixtures so members could review the proposed models.
Commissioners asked clarifying questions and offered positive feedback on the style and documentation provided. Commissioner Nancy moved to approve the application "as presented," and Commissioner Megan seconded. Roll-call votes recorded Shawn, Megan, Nancy, Ed and Vice Chair Greg Johnson voting yes; the motion carried 5–0.
The commission also approved the minutes from its May 20 meeting after two small corrections: changing a transcribed phrase to "lean-to" and correcting the date at the top of the minutes from the 21st to the 20th. Vice Chair Johnson reminded applicants they would receive written notice of the commission's decision by the next business day.
The meeting closed with no old business and the next regular meeting scheduled for Wednesday, July 15. A motion to adjourn carried and Johnson declared the meeting adjourned.
