Police chief proposes auctioning old motor home to help buy trailer command post

The Perry City police chief told the council on March 16 that the department’s donated motor home used as a mobile command post has developed structural, roof and electrical issues and should be surplused and sold.
"We would like to take the motor home and sell it at auction," the chief said, explaining that the department would apply the auction proceeds toward the purchase of a trailer-style command post designed for incident command use. The chief said estimates for a trailer are between $25,000 and $30,000 and that the motor home would likely bring roughly $7,500–$8,000 at auction.
Funding plan: the chief said the balance would come from the department’s investigative/forfeiture fund and other available departmental funds. The chief argued that a purpose-built trailer would be more effective for on-scene coordination at incidents than the existing motor home.
Councilors signaled informal concurrence to add the item as a supplemental agenda item for a formal vote at the next council meeting.
Next steps: staff will place the command-post replacement request on the supplemental agenda for the March 17 meeting for formal consideration and any required appropriation.
