Local phone company board runs blind draw for five $1,500 scholarships

Blake Han, who identified himself as a member of the phone company board, ran a blind draw and announced five winners of the Mulberry Telecommunications scholarships. The scholarships are one‑time awards of $1,500 each for college seniors served by the town’s phone or internet service.
Han said nominations came from several communities including Clinton Prairie, Rossville, Carol, McCutchen and Harrison. He drew five winners and named two alternates to fill slots if any recipient declines. “I brought some hats...I was counting heads. I brought 12 hats,” he said while conducting the blind draw.
Council members also confirmed upcoming community events: a spring cleanup on Thursday, April 30 (to be posted on social media and included in water bills) and an electronic recycling event on Saturday, May 2 from 8 a.m. to noon in front of the police department. Staff reminded residents to call with questions about trash pickup and to bring electronics to the designated site.
These items were routine agenda business and required no votes; the council recorded the scholarship winners and moved on to other agenda items.
