Council approves pickleball trial; discusses second city park and veterans memorial

The Walker City Council on May 4 approved a one-month trial for the Walker Area Pickleball Club to use the tennis court and held a discussion about creating a second city park.
The council approved (M/S Haefele/Wilkening) Park Advisory Board recommendations to reserve tennis-court time for pickleball from 7 a.m.–9 a.m. and 2 p.m.–dusk, allow shared play from 9 a.m.–2 p.m. (with priority for tennis players), require signage to communicate times, and begin a 30-day trial on June 1, 2026; the motion passed 5-0. The Council stipulated that pickleball may use the tennis court for overflow only when all pickleball courts are in use.
Councilmembers also discussed using a city-owned parcel near the Walker Area Community Center (contingent on completion of the Tower Avenue street extension) for a second city park that could include a skate park and a dog park. The council noted a submitted agreement from the Walker American Legion to install a veterans memorial in South City Park but said the agreement has not been signed; staff will contact the Legion to determine the preferred memorial location.
No formal vote was taken on creating a new park during the meeting.
