Rothsay certifies Nov. 5 election; Shane Balken named mayor, Heather Weber and Daryl Schleeter to council

The Rothsay City Council unanimously adopted Resolution No. 2024-6 on Nov. 13, 2024, formally canvassing the Nov. 5 general election and declaring Shane Balken the mayor and Heather Weber and Daryl Schleeter the two council members elected to four-year terms.
The canvass recorded 387 registered voters. Certified tallies reported for mayor were Shane Balken 177 votes, Travis Shirley 51 votes and 12 write-in votes. For the two council seats the reported totals were Daryl Schleeter 154, Heather Weber 154, Matthew Balken 81, Matthew Larson 28 and 8 write-in votes. The resolution states the listed candidates were elected for the respective terms.
Mayor Joe Tillman called the special meeting to order at 6:49 p.m. Council Members Darrell Tollefson and Nathan Ziegler were recorded present; Council Members Dana Holland Jr. and Shane Balken were recorded absent. Amanda Kuschel and Heather Weber were listed as others present in the minutes. The canvass resolution was moved by Council Member Darrell Tollefson, seconded by Council Member Nathan Ziegler, and carried unanimously.
The council’s action at the Nov. 13 meeting was limited to adopting the canvass resolution and certifying the vote totals; no additional agenda items or debates were recorded in the minutes. The meeting adjourned at 6:50 p.m. Minutes were submitted by Rothsay City Clerk/Treasurer Amanda Kuschel.
