LPS presents 10-year outdoor-amenities plan to address equity, prioritize elementary projects

Liz Standish presented the results of a districtwide inventory and needs analysis of outdoor spaces and amenities across Lincoln Public Schools, describing a 10-year plan to raise baseline standards and address gaps in equity across elementary, middle and high schools.
At the elementary level the operations team developed a matrix that evaluates play types, capacity, grade-level accommodation, inclusivity and accessibility. The plan proposes focusing on roughly four elementary schools per year with community partners and the Foundation for Lincoln Public Schools invited to contribute where appropriate.
For middle schools Standish said principals prioritized seating and social areas (benches, picnic tables) so students have places to gather during lunch and social periods. Standish said the analysis recommended against broad investments in irrigated grass fields at the elementary or middle level because of high capital, maintenance and environmental costs and the limited seasonal use of such facilities.
At the high-school level, the district and its design partner reviewed site constraints and recommended investments that maximize access and consistency across campuses. Standish highlighted adding lights to primary fields at high schools to extend usable hours on synthetic turf and named baseball/softball and video-board disparities at district athletic complexes as targets for future work.
Standish said funding could come from general fund grounds work, depreciation for major capital replacements (turf, tracks, field lights), building funds and private partners; next steps include refining project lists and schedules tied to available funding.
