Lonsdale City Council approves targeted repairs to Fire Hall roof and new interior flooring

The Lonsdale City Council voted unanimously March 26 to approve two contracts to repair and update portions of the city's Fire Hall, approving a $52,500 roofing quote for the east addition and a $12,977 interior flooring replacement.
Fire Chief Joe Pumper told the council the east section of the Fire Hall — a 2002 addition — has experienced multiple leaks in recent years. Contractors provided multiple bids; Nieman Roofing Co., Inc. submitted an alternate quote of $52,500 for the targeted replacement, while full-building replacement bids ranged from $120,800 to $132,410. Pumper said the isolated nature of the leaks made replacing only the east addition the most cost-effective option. Mayor Tom Berg moved to approve the quote; Brian Wermerskirchen seconded and the motion passed 5-0.
Pumper also recommended replacing worn interior flooring in the kitchen, bathrooms, hallway and dispatch office. He said sections of dispatch flooring were pulling loose and creating trip hazards. Fortress Floors of MN quoted $12,977 for a commercial-grade polyurea system with a 15-year warranty; staff recommended the more comprehensive approach after the roof work came in under budget. Scott Pelava moved approval; Kari Miller seconded and the council approved the flooring work 5-0.
City Administrator Joel Erickson confirmed the Fire Department had budgeted $80,000 for roof work and that the targeted approach would keep the repair well within that budget. The approved work includes removal of the existing roofing system on the east addition, installation of an EPDM roofing system, updated flashing, insulation adjustments and drainage improvements; the flooring scope covers offices, kitchen, bathrooms and the meeting room.
Contract awards carry routine council oversight and will proceed to scheduling and contractor coordination. The council did not discuss a construction start date at the meeting.
