The Wahpeton City Council on March 10 retained Dekoter, Thole, Dawson, Rockman & Krikke, P.L.C. to represent the city after a split vote and approved several funding and administrative measures.
Councilmember Tom Rierson moved to retain Dekoter, Thole, Dawson, Rockman & Krikke, P.L.C., seconded by Councilmember Brad Jones; Rierson, Councilmember Merlyn Kruger, Jones and Councilmember Holly Mead voted aye and Councilmember Rosalise Olson voted nay, carrying the motion 4–1. Earlier in the meeting Olson and Mead had voted to retain Stein Law Office, but that motion failed when Rierson, Kruger and Jones voted no.
The council approved a one-time payment of $10,000 for FY 2025–26 to the Lakewood Park Association after Joe Meyer of the association answered questions about the request. The motion to fund the association was made by Councilmember Merlyn Kruger and seconded by Councilmember Holly Mead; all councilmembers present voted aye.
Councilmembers also voted unanimously to allow sale of old street signs and direct the proceeds to the capital Tennis/Pickleball Project, following a motion by Tom Rierson and second by Merlyn Kruger. The council appointed Glen Kruger to the Wahpeton Board of Adjustment for a five-year term on a motion by Holly Mead, seconded by Tom Rierson; the motion passed unanimously.
The council referred a request from Charlie Kneip of Crescent Beach Resort—seeking funding for dredging around Crescent Beach Island—to the finance committee for additional study rather than taking immediate action. Municipal advisor Tim Oswald of Piper Sandler and City Clerk/Administrator Carrie Funk appeared during the meeting to provide information on other agenda items.
The meeting adjourned at 6:32 p.m. and City Clerk/Administrator Carrie Funk reminded members of a special council meeting set for March 31 and upcoming committee meetings on water rates and park matters.
