Owner and state representative outline timeline for AMS Memorial reopening after code inspections

Isaac Schwantes, owner of AMS Memorial, told the Greene City Council on Jan. 12 that state inspections identified multiple code-related deficiencies and that the facility has been given a six-month grace period to install a new furnace and duct system before a follow-up inspection.
Schwantes said the Iowa Department of Public Health and other department heads conducted inspections and that the facility must complete a series of improvements and replacements across the building. "We have been given a six-month grace period to get a new furnace and duct work installed," Schwantes said, adding that AMS is waiting on a second inspection this month; if that inspection is satisfactory, the facility plans to approve and onboard employees and then set an opening date.
State Representative Pat Grassley, who joined the meeting via Zoom, said he had pressed state officials and others to move the review process forward. "I have pushed as much as I can to try and get things moving forward," Grassley told the council. The meeting record indicates Grassley participated remotely while Schwantes described coordination with counsel (Dorsey and Whitney) and state agencies.
Schwantes also addressed operational questions from the council and public. On long-term insurance for residents he said decisions will depend on future contracts, attending physicians and insurance renewal policies. On transportation, Schwantes said AMS is seeking a van that would be used both for medical appointments and recreational trips for residents. He described assisted-living work as mostly complete: bathrooms and other spaces have been remodeled and repainting is about half finished.
The council received the update but did not take a formal vote related to AMS Memorial during the meeting. No firm reopening date was provided; Schwantes characterized remaining items as contingent on the second inspection and completion of required repairs and systems upgrades.
