Council approves displaying 1983 Minnesota state flag after 5–1 vote

Jackson City Council voted 5–1 on April 7 to adopt Resolution No. 08-0426 authorizing the display of the 1983 version of the Minnesota state flag on city property.
Alderman Nathan Peterson introduced the resolution and told the council that Jackson County had already adopted a similar policy. During the discussion Alderman Mark Titus said the measure was political in nature, calling it "a political protest against the new flag," and said he would vote against it. Peterson and other supporters argued each city may choose which state flag to display; proponents noted the county had already approved the older flag.
The motion (PETERSON/PELL) carried on a 5–1 vote: Aldermen Mike Schwartz, Shawn Foster, Nathan Peterson, Joe Pell and John Weland voted in favor; Alderman Mark Titus voted against the measure. The mayor presided over the vote.
Council members also discussed logistical questions raised by Titus about flagpole rigging at City Hall and whether the proposed display would be outside City Hall; those operational points were noted but did not block approval of the resolution.
