Residents urge limits on retail cannabis licenses during Jackson public comment

Jackson, Minn. — Two residents used the council’s Open Forum to urge the Jackson City Council to revisit the city’s Retail Cannabis ordinance and consider limiting the number of retail cannabis licenses.
Brad Strom said he and his wife wanted the council to consider rewriting the city’s ordinance because it currently places no limit on the number of retail cannabis licenses the city may issue, and he said two licenses have already been approved. “Maybe the City of Jackson could just have two retail cannabis shops, maybe it will only be one,” Strom said, urging councilmembers to think about setting a cap.
Sarah Strom said she spoke “with a heavy heart and a very serious concern for the children in our community,” and relayed that a friend in Colorado lost a son to a drug involving an additive; she asked the council to consider community safety when assessing retail cannabis expansion.
Mayor Marcus Polz thanked both speakers for their comments. The council did not take action on the ordinance at the meeting; the mayor reminded the public that Open Forum is for unscheduled comments and that the council may direct staff to investigate concerns after the meeting.
